Green incentives for airlines promoted - 31/03/09
Airlines including British Airways and Virgin would be encouraged to use the greenest planes under new incentives being urged by transport secretary Geoff Hoon.
Those companies operating the most eco-friendly and quietest aircraft could benefit from priority access to new takeoff and landing "slots" at Heathrow under the proposed measures, Mr Hoon told fellow EU transport ministers at talks in Brussels.
And he said that Britain should not be alone in its bid to encourage corporate social responsibility among airlines. "This is something we can do unilaterally, but it is undoubtedly better if there is a European agreement to do the same," he urged.
Ministers have now agreed to look at the plan as part of a wider review of policies designed to make flying more environmentally-friendly.
Mr Hoon added: "What I am talking about is giving priority access to new slots at Heathrow to companies using newer, more fuel-efficient planes.
"Aircraft tend to be replaced about every 25 years, so those investing in newer aircraft are getting 25 years of efficiency improvements. If we can incentivise operators to buy the latest, least polluting aircraft, then part of the (environmental) problem is solved."
