Eurostar ups carbon reduction target - 29/04/09
Eurostar has increased its carbon reduction target to 35% per passenger journey by 2012, it has announced.
The 10% rise from the previous CO2 emission-cutting target of 25% comes after the Channel Tunnel train company revealed it had managed to cut CO2 emissions per passenger journey by 31% in 2008 compared with 2007.
The company, which operates high-speed services between London and Paris and Brussels, said it is committed to neutralising the carbon emissions from all passenger journeys from the date of Eurostar's move to St Pancras station in November 2007 by offsetting them through investment in projects which reduce the same amount of CO2.
Eurostar chief executive Richard Brown said: "There is a clear appetite among consumers to find ways of reducing the carbon emissions from their holiday travel, and an expectation that the industry should help them do this.
"It is time to harness consumer pressure and business creativity into a virtuous circle of actions to tackle climate change, that will help travellers cut the overall emissions generated by their holiday travel."
