Corporates switch off for Earth Hour - 27/03/09
Thousands of businesses around the world will this weekend be taking part in what is expected to be the largest ever global event aimed at tackling climate change.
Almost 3,000 cities and towns in 84 countries have signed up in support of Earth Hour on Saturday March 28, all pledging to turn off their lights for one hour to reduce the global carbon footprint.
One of the biggest companies doing its bit for the environment is soft drinks giant Coca-Cola, which will be turning off many of its iconic signs, including those in London's Piccadilly Circus and Times Square, New York.
Muhtar Kent, Coca-Cola's president and chief executive, said: "We are pleased to join thousands of communities, organisations and individuals in raising awareness about actions we all can take to slow, stop and eventually reverse the effects of climate change.
"Earth Hour is a great way to demonstrate that small, simple steps like turning out lights, when taken by people around the world, can drive real momentum in fighting a universal issue like climate change."
And it is not too late for other firms wanting to demonstrate their corporate social responsibilities by reducing CO2 emissions as part of Earth Hour - which starts in the UK at 8pm - as the Vote Earth 2009 website (www.voteearth2009.org) is still accepting registrations.
