Businesses focus of internet awards - 06/03/09
Corporate social responsibility within the internet industry is a key focus of the Best Practice Challenge hosted by Nominet, the registry for .uk domain names.
Its emphasis on security, openness, accessibility and diversity is intended to bolster the first UK Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which was held at the House of Commons.
Said communications minister Lord Carter: "One of the principal roles of the IGF is to share best practice with organisations and individuals across the globe."
The challenge celebrates British achievement and innovation in relation to the themes of the UN's own governance forum.
It is open to any organisation, group or individual that has improved access to the Internet. Examples include projects for the disabled or disadvantaged, and those that enhance trust and confidence.
Categories include the Internet-for-all Award, which promotes the diversity of cultures within the UK, and the Open Internet Award, which hails knowledge and information that bring citizens closer to parliamentarians or government.
Winners will be announced in July and promoted as demonstrating best practice within industry, government, academia and the media both in the UK and internationally.
